Love Makes a Family – 2008 Victorian Law reform

“Experiencing the vote last night in the upper house of parliament was one of the most amazing and exhilarating experiences I have had”.

Love Makes a Family was the community advocacy campaign of the Rainbow Families Council that ran from 2004 until 2010.

Founded in 2004, Love Makes A Family aimed to provide a community response to the Victorian Law Reform Commission’s initial consultation paper on Assisted Reproductive Technology and Adoption.
The campaign was originally coordinated through the Fertility Access Rights Lobby, at that time a working group of the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby. At the third Rainbow Families Conference in September 2006, the interim Rainbow Families Council was created to replace Fertility Access Rights Lobby, and Love Makes a Family became the campaign of the Rainbow Families Council.
The campaign for adoption law reform continues today under the banner of Love Makes A Family. See the Adoption Campaign page for details.

Our campaign aims and strategies

Sitting down in 2004 a few of us developed four small, yet what we hoped would be achievable, aims for the Love Makes A Family Campaign.

The importance of telling our stories

Telling our personal stories, talking about our real hopes and dreams about creating families and being parents or grandparents, counted as a unique individual opinion each and every time.

We changed hearts and minds

The strategy of building up both our community’s confidence over several years and of encouraging people to personally meet with their local Member of Parliament paid off.

We won!

At about 8.30pm on December 4, the last sitting day of 2008, the final vote for the third reading was called for the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Bill (2008).

How the Love Makes a Family Campaign was won
