Visit a Minister

Do you live in one of these towns or suburbs? We need you!

Below is a list of 206 towns, suburbs or parts of suburbs represented by the Members of Parliament (MPs) who happen to also be the 20 Ministers of the Victorian Government. If you live in one of these suburbs, we need you to visit that Minister during the months of August and September. If your mum or other supportive family member lives there, perhaps you could go with them!

Everyone has one lower house member of Parliament (Member of the Legislative Assembly, or MLA) for their local electorate, and five upper house members of Parliament (Member of the Legislative Council, or MLC) representing their region. A Minister can be either an MLA or MLC.

The 20 Ministers of the Victorian Government are all members of the Cabinet – the government committee which will make the final policy decision about which of the 130 recommendations made by the Victorian Law Reform Commission “Assisted Reproductive Technology & Adoption” Final Report the Victorian Government will act upon.

We have been told by the MPs who have already received visits from rainbow families, that these face-to-face meetings where people tell their personal story makes a lasting impression.

When the issues are raised in the Cabinet, we want each of the 20 Ministers at the meeting to be able to say that they have meet someone directly affected by the current discriminatory laws in Victoria - a same sex-parented family, or a lesbian, gay or bisexual prospective parent, our children or our extended families – grandparents, aunties, uncles or friends.

So what do you do?

We need all of the Ministers to receive visits in August or September if possible. If you find your town or suburb on one of two lists that follow, then follow the steps below.

There are two ways to go.

1. If you've never visited an MP before and would like some support, you can fill in our MP Visit Registration Form, and one of our MP Visit Advisers (people who have already visited their MPs) will contact you to give your local Minister's contacts, talk you through the process, give you lots of resources, and be available for debriefing after your visit.

2. OR you can simply: download our Handy Hints and Cheat Sheets from our main campaign page, download our Minister Contact Sheet below and go ahead with your visit.
