Victorian Law Reforms
The Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act was passed by Victorian Parliament in December 2008. This removes barriers to fertility treatment for same-sex couples and provides legal recognition for our families. This is the legislation that so many of our families got involved in campaigning for.
On 1 January 2010 the Assisted Reproductive Treatment (ART) Act 2008 came into effect.
Birth Certificates
In relation to the registration of births, families with two mothers can begin to register both mothers as parents on birth certificates from 4 January 2010. This is true for babies born from now on, but also applies retrospectively to kids born before now. For details on correcting an existing birth certificate, registering a new birth (including births resulting from self-insemination), or the donor registry, go to the Victorian Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages www.bdm.vic.
