Share your story

One way that you can can support the Love Makes a Family campaign is by sharing your family story. Personal stories and images are very important. They help provide a human side to counter the rhetoric of those opposing any law reform that supports members of the GLBTI community. Our stories show the real, day-to-day impact that the law and societal attitudes have on our families, help to highlight why change is urgently needed and illustrate the many positive aspects of being part of a rainbow family.

We believe that people define for themselves what family means to them, and who is their family. We use the term ‘rainbow families’ to describe families with one or more parents/carers/ donors who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex. We encourage you to ask anyone in your family – children, foster children, grandparents, aunties, donors, surrogates etc – to contribute to telling your family story. We need stories from a diversity of families, including prospective parents.

How to share your story

There are lots of ways you can share your story. You can use our online questionnaire, or download it as a Word document. You can write your story yourself, or contact us to arrange an interview. Please contact campaign coordinator Felicity Marlowe to find out more on 0411 593 607 or via email

We'd love to include an image of your family - perhaps a photo, or maybe your child could draw a picture! Please email us a jpg file or similar.

How will your story be used?

The Love Makes a Family campaign will be drawing on stories people share for different purposes. You can give consent for us to use your story (or quotes from it) for one or more purposes. For information email Felicity at lmaf@vic.chariot.net.au

We also encourage you to think about telling your story in the media, whether queer, community or mainstream media. This is a very powerful way of ‘winning hearts and minds’. We can provide lots of support and information about how to do it safely. Thank you!
